The SELI Children’s Community Library is a welcoming learning space created to serve children and young people aged 2 to 17 years. It provides access to books, guided learning, and enriching experiences that support literacy, creativity, and lifelong learning beyond the classroom.
At SELI, we believe that every child deserves early and continuous exposure to books, safe learning spaces, and positive learning experiences. The SELI Children’s Community Library was established to respond to the learning needs of children and teenagers who may have limited access to age-appropriate books, supportive reading environments, and guided learning opportunities.
The library serves as a community hub where children can read, listen to stories, explore ideas, play, ask questions, and grow in confidence, all within a caring and supportive environment.
The library serves children and young people aged 2 to 17 years, including:
SELI is committed to improving learning outcomes and expanding opportunities that ensure children, teenagers, and young people not only attend school but thrive while there across Northern Nigeria. We advance education through playful learning, libraries and literacy programs, teacher training and consultancy, and youth leadership, equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to thrive and succeed academically, thereby contributing meaningfully to their communities.
Our programmes are thoughtfully designed to meet children at different developmental stages, from early language exposure to independent reading and study support.
The SELI Children’s Community Library is more than shelves of books. It is an active learning and discovery space where children engage through:
Each activity is carefully structured to be engaging, age-appropriate, and supportive of holistic child development
Our library approach is rooted in early childhood education principles, play-based learning, and child-centred facilitation. We understand that learning looks different at every stage of a child’s growth.
For younger children, learning happens through play, games, stories, and interaction.
For older children and teenagers, learning is supported through reading, discussion, guided study, and critical thinking activities.
Across all ages, we prioritize:
Library sessions are supported by trained volunteers and facilitators who are passionate about children’s learning and development. They guide activities, support reading sessions, and ensure that every child feels safe, welcomed, and encouraged.
SELI places strong emphasis on child protection, care, and responsible engagement in all library programmes.
